The two-time Mexican champion continues to meet expectations in the Leagues Cup.
The Águilas del América triumphed 2-1 over Atlas this Friday in the Round of 32 of the Leagues Cup, securing their place in the Round of 16.
In their first appearance in the tournament featuring both Mexican and MLS clubs, América saw goals from Erick Sánchez and Henry Martín, while José Lozano scored for Atlas, who were subsequently eliminated from the competition.
In the next round, the two-time Mexican champions will take on the American side Saint Louis City, who advanced after eliminating the Portland Timbers from the Leagues Cup.
América dominated possession in the first half and, after several missed opportunities, took the lead in the 20th minute. Uruguayan Brian Rodríguez provided an assist to Erick Sánchez, who scored with a header to make it 1-0.
In the second half, Atlas improved their performance and equalized in the 59th minute. Raymundo Fulgencio delivered a cross from the left that José Lozano finished with a header to level the score at 1-1.
However, the Eagles secured the win with a counterattack. Dutchman Javairô Dilrosun assisted Henry Martín, who scored with a backheel in the 73rd minute to give América a 2-1 victory.
