Snoop Dogg Launches Breakdancing's Olympic Debut in Epic Style

Reaction to China Winning Artistic Swimming Gold at the Paris Olympics

Breaking, also known as breakdancing, made a stunning debut as an Olympic sport.

 

Snoop Dogg opened the competition Friday at Place de la Concorde in Paris via the coup de baton, when a wooden baton is struck on the floor to signal an event’s commencement.

Dressed in a red, white and blue tracksuit, the Grammy-nominated rapper — who has been making the most of his time in Paris and reportedly earning $500,000 per day as an Olympics correspondent for NBC an Peacock — accessorized with colorful kicks as the festivities got underway.

Men and women will compete separately at the Paris Games, with the “competition consist[ing] of battles between two athletes. Each battle consists of a number of rounds. In each round one athlete performs first, then the other responds,” according to the Olympics’ official website .

The women’s competition on Friday will culminate in a gold medal showdown, while the men will compete on Saturday.

Team USA’s breaking squad features two b-boys, Jeffrey Louis and Victor Montalvo, alongside two b-girls, Sunny Choi and Logan Edra.

This summer has been eventful for Snoop Dogg, 52, who began his Olympic journey by carrying the torch before the opening ceremony on July 26.

The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr., also offered commentary for a badminton match between the U.S. and China on July 28.


Beyond his commentary work, Snoop Dogg supported star Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and Team USA at Bercy Arena, where they won gold in the all-around final.


His presence and moves also drew attention from Biles and her teammate, Jordan Chiles.

Outside the gymnastics circuit, Snoop Dogg visited Château de Versailles, where he fed horses and enjoyed the dressage events in the equestrian competition alongside Martha StewartThe 2024 Olympics will wrap up on Sunday with the closing ceremony.
