Drew Barrymore Reveals '50 First Dates' Was Initially a 'Drama Set in Seattle' with a Different Title and Ending
"Thank you for making those changes," Ross Mathews told Barrymore on her daytime talk show.
"5
0 First Dates" could have been a very different film.
As Drew Barrymore shared on her daytime talk show earlier this week, the 2004 romantic comedy she starred in with Adam Sandler was originally titled "50 First Kisses" and was conceived as a drama set in Seattle.
However, the film that was eventually released took place in Hawaii, with Barrymore, 49, playing Lucy, a woman with short-term memory loss who falls in love with marine veterinarian Henry, played by Sandler, 57.
In the final version of "50 First Dates," Henry makes a daily video to remind Lucy of their relationship and their life together, even after they’ve had a child. But Barrymore revealed that the original ending had Lucy telling Henry, "You should go and live your life, because this is no life here."

On her new daytime show, Drew Barrymore shared a fascinating twist on "50 First Dates," revealing an alternate ending: “Henry goes away, as he does, then returns, walks into the restaurant, and simply says, ‘Hi, I’m Henry.’ And that’s how the film ends,” she explained.
Barrymore's co-host, Ross Mathews, looked astonished and responded, “Honestly, can I just say: Thank you. Thank you for changing it.”
"50 First Dates" was the second film collaboration between Sandler and Barrymore, who also starred together in 1998's "The Wedding Singer" and 2014's "Blended." Both actors have expressed a desire to work together again in the future.
Discussing their on-screen chemistry in March 2023, Barrymore told PEOPLE that their connection is grounded in "love, admiration, and humor." She added, “I wanted a place to channel my admiration, and I thought a film was the safest and most cathartic way to do it.”

In December 2023, Drew Barrymore considered the possibility of a "50 First Dates" sequel during a conversation with Jason Momoa on her show. As they discussed the release of Momoa's film
*Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom*, Barrymore mentioned how her daughters love "50 First Dates" and "Ever After," referring to them as "Mom movies."
When Momoa, 45, asked Barrymore if she had a favorite comedy from her filmography, she highlighted "50 First Dates" and then posed a question to her guest: “If you were to remake a romantic comedy, which one would you choose?”
Momoa playfully suggested, “Maybe '50 More Dates,'" prompting Barrymore to react with an exaggerated gasp and a dramatic hair flip, which Momoa mirrored in response.
He then joked, “You need to come back to the islands and meet a Hawaiian man.”
Barrymore enthusiastically replied, “I would totally do that. Are you kidding?”
